Today was the big day! I got here at 8am to start setting up. I set up the Kesem tables, outdoor games, and got ready for volunteers to arrive. Once volunteers arrived I chatted with each of them, got them a volunteer shirt and told them the game plan for our meeting. Once everyone was here we had volunteer naming circles where the Kesem volunteers and I helped everyone pick their Kesem names for the day. Molly led the volunteer meeting, I helped with all of the Kesem parts, and any questions people had. Once everyone was ready we went outside to start playing games to be approachable to the kids. I greeted families as they arrived and directed them to check-in. We played with the kids then finished up our time outside by performing a camp song. We went inside and led naming circles with the families to get them into the Kesem mindset. Then we had brunch where we bonded with the families and helped lead them through a family strengths activity to get them talking about what makes their family special. I was having a really nice time with the family I sat with. Next, we split everyone into their groups and released them to their stations. Each station was designed to teach the kids about a specific aspect of the journey inside the cancer center. Nurses taught the kids about IV access, finding veins, mixing medicines, using ports, looking at blood under a microscope, and radiation. Kesem and our social work team had resource tables to talk to the caregivers about how we can support them and their families. My Kesem team did a great job of explaining the magic and how we can support their kiddos. I really bonded with one of the families and I’m excited for them to hopefully register for camp so we can continue supporting them. We gathered the families in the lobby and I led a closing circle song with my Kesem people. We said goodbye to everyone and cleaned everything up. It was a super awesome and successful event!
