Summary of Week 12 Matched with Competencies

  • 6.3: Develop message(s) using communication theories and/or models.
    • 6.3.4: Employ media literacy skills (e.g., identifying credible sources and balancing multiple view points)
      • While working on our breast and testicular self-exam hanger, we researched each exam type and cancer type to provide the most credible information about how to perform the exam and statistics about each type of cancer. Statistics help people understand the severity of the disease and reinforce the importance of screening. While doing this research we had to identify credible sources to ensure we provide the best information to our patients and community members.
  • 3.1: Coordinate the delivery of intervention(s)consistent with the implementation plan.
    • 3.1.5: Train staff and volunteers to ensure fidelity.
      • I love training new volunteers! This week I trained a younger volunteer who was struggling to grasp how it worked. I tried explaining it in different words and narrating what one of the other volunteers was doing to help her better understand. I also told her to “shadow” one of the more experienced volunteers to watch her through the whole process so she could learn what to do. This was the first time I’ve really struggles to train a volunteer so I hope my different approaches ended up being helpful to her.

Reflection of Week 12

  • This week was a good week! I loved being involved in the new volunteer interview process. It was really cool to see the process and watch Molly in her zone. It feels like so long since I interviewed with them that it was awesome to see how Molly explains the building and program to new people. I loved seeing the passion and professionalism in each of the applicants. I’ve interviewed a lot of people for Kesem, but those interviews are very structured and boring. These interviews were more interesting to me and I loved the group setting. We had some good meetings this week, I’m really excited for volunteer appreciation week because they are the basis of this whole foundation, we couldn’t have the impact we do without them. I think it’s going to be a fun week! I was so excited that Amy wanted us to work on a breast and testicular self-exam guide specific to UCBC Cares. This is the exact kind of education I’m passionate about! Awareness of ones own body is one of the most important aspects of catching cancer early, resulting in a better outcome.
