Today was the big day!!!! I got there at 7:30 to start working. My first task was blowing up poop emoji balloons for the kids. Molly and I got on the golf carts to start driving volunteers from the parking lot to the main building. I had so much fun driving the golf cart and talking to all of the volunteers. As volunteers arrived we put them to work setting up, then once all of them arrived we had a volunteer meeting. Amy, Molly, Yessica, and I all gave info on the sections we were captains for. A lot of volunteers were sick or no showed so we had to move around some assignments to make sure I had enough on check-in. I was the check-in captain and check-in was super important to make sure everyone had a liability waiver signed, got their t-shirt, and felt welcomed. We had to make sure all the vendors arrived before moving the check-in tent. Vendors were able to park in staff parking so they could set up their tables. Vendors ranged from the new UGA School of Medicine, hospice groups, drug companies, and a colonoscopy scope company that was really cool. Vendors talked to attendees about their services. Attendees started arriving at 9:15am and the event wasn’t going to be fully set until 9:45am so we had to hold them off until the full event was ready. Once everything was ready we were free to release them to get their free t-shirts and explore the event. As more people arrived we greeted them, made sure they were registered, and directed them through the event. Once most attendees were there, Amy kicked off the speaking and introduced one of our vendors to lead stretching. Then our moderator kicked off the rest of the speaking by some of our other doctors. The doctors talked about early screening, prevention, and genetic risk factors. After speaking we had a duo lead jazzercise to get the crowd warmed up for the walk. They were so fun! Once they were done, the group was corralled to start walking. Once the walkers were out of sight we started flipping the check-in table to pass out food when they get back. There was some confusion so the walkers only did 1 lap when they were supposed to do 2 so it went faster than it was supposed to. As they got back we directed people to the food and to stay for our survivor story, but it was hard to corral them so we did lose a good chunk of people for the final story and giveaways. Her story was awesome and impactful and emphasized the importance of early screening. Then we had a drawing for a chair and stools for the people who signed up to get more information about colonoscopies. Yessica was at the table to encourage and inform people about colon cancer screening. Once the event was closed out we did some more mingling, I got to meet a man from the new UGA School of Medicine. Then we started breaking down the event. This wasn’t anything crazy, but it’s awesome when a big team of people can make work move quickly. I had to leave at noon to get to my next big event for Kesem, but it was a great morning of raising awareness about colon cancer and its screening protocols.
