Summary of week 4 Matched with Competencies
- 6.3: Develop message(s) using communication theories and/or models.
- 6.3.4: Employ media literacy skills (e.g., identifying credible sources and balancing multiple view points)
- I worked on cancer awareness month posts this week again and sorted through sources to find valuable information. Choosing which information to include in the posts has been a balancing act of deciding how to present serious information. Cancer is a serious subject and it can be difficult to decide how to phrase information that can seriously impact people at higher risk of developing cancer.
- 6.3.4: Employ media literacy skills (e.g., identifying credible sources and balancing multiple view points)
- 3.2: Deliver health education and promotion interventions.
- 3.2.4: Deliver health education and promotion as designed.
- I did not directly deliver the health education and promotion at the Breast Friends event on Saturday, but I wanted to include it as a competency since I was a part of the event and it was very impactful programming. The doctors of UCBC answered a lot of commonly asked questions about breast health and breast cancer as well as accepted specific questions from the audience. They weren’t able to get through all of the questions, but made a point to send a follow up email with more information to all attendees. They preached early detection through regular self checks and screening.
- 3.2.4: Deliver health education and promotion as designed.
- 2.1: Engage priority populations, partners, and stakeholders for participation in the planning process.
- 2.1.2: Facilitate collaborative efforts among priority populations, partners, and stakeholders.
- This week I went into the community to talk to businesses about working with us for Strollin. I set the foundation for Molly to follow up and hopefully partner with these local businesses. Sponsoring our event can look different depending on what the company wants to do. Some of the people I talked to are also in healthcare and may want to set up booths to promote their services alongside ours. Once people commit to sponsoring, Molly will communicate with them about how they want to collaborate.
- 2.1.2: Facilitate collaborative efforts among priority populations, partners, and stakeholders.
Reflection of week 4
- This week really showed that we are in the thick of event season! There was lots of planning, scrambling, and putting on events this week. The lunch and learn with The Cancer Foundation was the first event that Yessica and I were here for and showed me another side of non profit work that I’ve seen before. We planned and advertised for Strollin for the Colon and will continue to work on sponsorships throughout the next month. Breast Friends created chaos towards the end of the week, but that’s just how big events go. We worked together and made it happen. It was awesome to see everyone’s hard work come together into such an important and empowering event. I was only a small part of planning this event and it’s awesome how much work all the ladies did to make it happen.
