Today was Breast Friends! I got to the venue at 7:45 to help coordinate the male volunteers who got there at 8 to help set up and run parking. I hopped in setting up. I watched one of the employees’ kids for a little bit and kept her busy. Once the rest of the volunteers showed up Molly gave them a run through of their tasks. My main task was going to be entertaining the children at the event, but I didn’t end up doing that because they were just fine by themselves and ended up sitting with their moms. Because I no longer had a specific role, I floated around preparing food, greeting guests, picking up trash, and other general event things. The programming started with an educational panel of different doctors from UCBC. They talked all about breast cancer, prevention, treatment, and survivorship. There was a break in programming then we had a few speakers. Kirby Smart’s wife recorded a testimonial video at the breast health center a few weeks ago that they played. She is at high risk because of her mother and sister having breast cancer and talked about the resources we have at UCBC. Then one of the ladies who helped plan the event talked about her own breast cancer journey and how early screening is what made her cancer so treatable. She preached mammograms and taking care of ourselves as women even when it’s hard to find the time. Once guests started leaving we started cleaning up. As a team we were able to get things done pretty quickly.
