Summary of week 3 Matched with Competencies

  • 2.1: Engage priority populations, partners, and stakeholders for participation in the planning process.
    • 2.1.1: Convene priority populations, partners, and stakeholders.
      • On Thursday we met at the GI building with the main organizational team for Strollin for the Colon to discuss progress, next steps, and ideas. These kinds of meetings don’t include all stakeholders because the medical personnel are busy so conversations about them helping happen on their time. This meeting allowed Lindsey to share about the conversations she had with a wider range of stakeholders.
  • 6.3: Develop message(s) using communication theories and/or models.
    • 6.3.4: Employ media literacy skills (e.g., identifying credible sources and balancing multiple view points).
      • Through creating the cancer awareness month posts, I’ve had to sort through different sources and organizations to decide what data to use. I’ve made sure to use all .org websites and organizations that I know are credible for providing cancer information. I’ve had to balance view points regarding what call to actions and recommendations we include in our captions. The main example would be with the cervical cancer post because Yessica and I wanted to include information on HPV vaccination because it’s the best way to prevent cervical cancer, but Amy is not comfortable with us giving direct health information about vaccines. This example put into perspective that there are some things we aren’t allowed to comment on as a non-profit from Amy’s perspective.

Reflection of week 3

  • Things are just moving and grooving at UCBC Cares! Like last week, I’m feeling more and more comfortable and confident in my work. I’m learning where things are, people’s names, and how Amy likes things done. This week was very content focused which was good because Yessica and I were able to plan a few months out which is the main goal of our internship! I’m really excited for next week when we actually start hosting events. Breast Friends on Saturday is going to be so cute, fun, and educational. Look Good Feel Better the following Monday is going to warm my heart and is exactly the kind of health promotion I want to do in my career.
