Summary of week 2 Matched with Competencies
- 2.1: Engage priority populations, partners, and stakeholders for participation in the planning process.
- 2.2.1: Convene priority populations, partners, and stakeholders.
- On Tuesday we met with the planning committees for Strollin for the Colon and Life is a Picnic to discuss where we’re at, what we want to improve from last year, what needs to be done, and who is going to do it. Even though not all partners and stakeholders were present, like sponsors, vendors, and other employees, we talked about their roles in the events.
- 2.2.1: Convene priority populations, partners, and stakeholders.
- 2.2: Define desired outcomes.
- 2.2.1: Identify desired outcomes using the needs and capacity assessment.
- In these meetings we discussed the desired outcomes for each event. Life is a Picnic is designed for cancer survivors and their families to feel connected to others through shared experiences. This will be facilitated through speakers, conversation, and collaborative art. Strollin for the Colon strives to bring awareness to colon cancer and the fact that people are being diagnosed at younger and younger ages. This event will include resources to schedule a colonoscopy through UCBC as well as other screening and prevention information. Hopefully we will be able to see the impact of these resources through increased colonoscopy scheduling.
- 2.2.1: Identify desired outcomes using the needs and capacity assessment.
- 6.5: Deliver the message(s) effectively using the identified media and strategies.
- 6.5.1: Deliver presentation(s) tailored to the audience(s).
- At the ACC Total Health fair I presented information primarily about our breast health center, while also touching on primary care, colorectal services, and gastrointestinal services. I tailored each presentation to the person or group I was talking to. Some people were really into chatting so I told them more than others. Aly taught me to still talk to all the men who walked by because they have to have some woman in their life they can remind to get a mammogram or to perform a self check. I remember one specific man who took self check guides for his daughters. Every audience is important to reach when talking about cancer.
- 6.5.1: Deliver presentation(s) tailored to the audience(s).
Reflection of week 2
- Week 2 went really well! I feel like I’m really understanding my role, responsibilities, and how things work at UCBC and UCBC Cares. I felt like I had more independence this week with Molly and Amy being out of office for a day and being able to cover for them when they have other responsibilities. I’ve gotten to work with more people this week than last week and be a true representation of UCBC Cares. I enjoyed getting to table at the ACC Total Health Fair to put my newly learned knowledge to test and share valuable health information with the general public. I feel like all of my tabling with Kesem really prepared me for this moment. This week I was able to sit in on more meetings and experience what a professional work place is like. I’m still loving my job and the people I get to work with.
