Hello week 2!! I started this week by forgetting my badge at home because I got out of my routine over the weekend, but everything worked out fine. I started my morning by catching up on my email and working on social media. I finally had time to sit down and play with Canva so I learned a lot. We have CanvaPro so there were a lot of tools I was able to mess around with that are going to up my social media game so much compared to regular Canva. One of the things I struggle with the most is making the background interesting. There is a whole section for backgrounds and a generative AI tool to help when I’m not finding a basic background that I like. I worked on posts for Look Good, Feel Better since I took photos of the products on Friday. I have a few options to show Amy at our content meeting on Wednesday. I also worked on a post advertising Mind Over Matter, a 5 week workshop to learn tips for dealing with strong emotions during cancer. I emailed back and forth with one of the social workers and need to make some edits tomorrow based on her feedback. I helped Molly caption some of her training videos for volunteers. She was struggling with getting captions added because Canva won’t caption voiceover recordings, only videos with sound, so I suggested downloading the video and then adding captions and it worked! She was very excited and grateful that I figured it out. When Amy got to the office she asked me to create a post for MLK day so I got to work on that. I shuffled through quotes and made a short list that I thought fit the mission of UCBC Cares. I got Molly’s input and we decided to go with, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’” because the mission of UCBC Cares is to help others. I put my newly found Canva skills to good use crafting this post and presented a few options to Amy when we met later in the morning. Molly, Amy, and I sat in Amy’s office to talk about priorities and meetings for tomorrow. Then we went to lunch, which was a nice salad and some bomb chicken. After lunch I got to put the skills I learned in volunteer bootcamp to use by training some volunteers working a new position. They have volunteered since August, but never worked on the infusion floor. I showed them where everything for the snack cart is, how to restock it, how to talk to patients, how to make fresh coffee, where to find warm blankets for patients, and what to do if a patient is “shopping off the cart”. “Shopping off the cart” is when patients take many snacks and we think they may be food insecure. If this happens we report it to Molly or Amy to get them connected to social work because we help provide patients with gift cards to purchase groceries if they are in need. While they took their first lap around the infusion floor I passed out flyers to ladies inviting them to Look Good, Feel Better. The volunteers were interested in it as well so I told them about it and left some flyers with them if they wanted to share with patients after I left. Earlier in the day Amy checked the sign ups for the event and 3 more people had registered since we advertised at the breast cancer support group and hung up flyers and invited people on Friday!!! This was awesome news because last week we only had 1 person signed up. This was super encouraging for me to continue inviting ladies when I have the time. It was awesome to be able to do a lot of independent work today. I really felt like I knew what I was doing and of course I’m still getting lost sometimes and don’t know everything, but I’m more comfortable and confident this week!
