Today started off great with a catered Chick-Fil-A breakfast that I ate while blogging about yesterday! Today I got to meet one of the major donors to UCBC Cares who is also a friend of my preceptor. We gave her a flyer for the Breast Friends event we’ll be hosting in February to hang up in the restaurant her husband owns. Amy and I talked about the importance of stewarding donors, maintaining confidentiality, and looking at donations through the lens of time people are donating to us rather than a dollar amount. While downstairs talking to this donor I ended up helping a gentleman get a wheelchair and get checked in. This is a responsibility of the volunteers for UCBC Cares, but they were all busy helping other patients so I stepped in until one of them got back to relieve me. Next, I sat in on a meeting with Amy and Kristen who is the director of colorectal and surgical oncology about UCBC Cares providing medication assistance for some of the patients in her clinic. One is a pancreatic enzyme and the other is a continuous glucose monitor, both for patients who have either had a whipple or pancreatectomy. These procedures impair pancreas functioning requiring lifelong medication. UCBC Cares helps patients pay for certain things that they can’t. We talked about price, insurance coverage, necessary diagnostics for coverage, and other brand options. This was really interesting and insightful to sit in on because Amy brought up things I hadn’t thought about like the fact that we don’t want to commit to paying for this medication for someone then have to pull out a year later because we no longer have enough funding to provide it, putting them back at square one. Kristen was very kind, smart, and prepared to talk through all options and pivot when needed. After this meeting Amy and I talked more about content and the schedule for the semester. I also helped Molly brainstorm ideas for the high school intern, Caroline, since she has no requirements from her school. We might have her help us do research for our social media posts that will include cancer and prevention statistics. I told Amy about all of the content ideas I brainstormed the other day and she liked them. Next we had lunch catered by Panera which is one of my favorite restaurants! Finally, Amy took me back to the breast health building which is half used for storage and staging because the main building is so full. She showed me the UCBC specific storage unit which had supplies for events like fully stocked makeup bags for Look Good Feel Better, tables, decor, and promotional items.
