Today was the first day of my internship with UCBC Cares! I’m interning alongside one of my classmates, Yessica. Our preceptors were busy this morning with some other tasks so we started our morning by handing out self care goodie bags on the third floor to patients who had checked in and were waiting to see their primary care provider. These goodie bags were made with donated Mary Kay products by one of the other interns, Caroline, who is a high school student participating in workbased learning. Once our preceptors were available, Amy, the head volunteer coordinator of UCBC Cares took Yessica and I on an extended tour of the facilities. We got to meet many different employees of UCBC and understand the importance of each role in keeping this place running smoothly, as well as treating all aspects of a patient going through cancer care. Amy is so kind and is exactly the kind of person I want to work for as she complimented every single person she introduced us to. This is a quality I try to have in my leadership and will continue to work on as I see the beautiful effect it has when Amy does it. After our tour, Amy got us set up with our UCBC Cares specific email addresses and we visited the guys in IT to help us set up Microsoft Teams. Once we were all settled, Amy started to walk us through our responsibilities for the semester. The main project that Yessica and I will be responsible for is creating all of the social media content for 2026. The plan is for us to tackle a quarter of the year each month, so in January we will create all content for the first quarter of the year and so on. We went through the Canva account to look at previous content and learn about the color palette, brand, and preferences Amy has for the content we create. Yessica and I started discussing how we want to divide the work each of us will do. We are also responsible for creating the monthly staff newsletter that informs all employees of the services we’ll be providing that month that they can tell their patients about. Amy also walked us through the impact report from 2025 so we could have a good idea of everything they did last year. By this point lunch had arrived for the day so Amy, Molly, Yessica, and I went to pick up our lunches and sat together while we ate. It was really fun to just sit and chat with them because they are all so fun and kind. I’m very grateful to be at UCBC Cares working with such awesome women! I’m also grateful that we get free lunch everyday! Overall, I had a great first day and I’m very excited to see where the rest of the semester takes me!
